We are documenting the following values to help us be accountable to our overall goal of working together toward land remediation and the health and well-being of residents of 5th ward and Cane River Gardens.
Ending environmental injustice
Environmental disasters and climate crises have significant negative effects on 5th ward residents including on land and housing
Protecting land rights
People whose families have lived in 5th ward for many generations have a right to ownership and stewardship of the land and are its best caregivers, while understanding that all land was originally stewarded by Indigenous communities
Cooperation and trust-building
Building cooperative, trustworthy relationships is an essential part of fighting for liberation and addressing climate justice, and we acknowledge that building trust and cooperation is ongoing practice that takes time
Decolonizing museum spaces
Museums can traditionally be spaces where voices of “artists” and “curators” are elevated and commodified; a decolonial museum for climate justice aims to lift up all community voices who have something to say about saving our planet
Mutual aid for local community
Cultural production can often exclude people whose basic material needs are not being met, so we aim to provide material support to collaborators and community members whenever possible as a mutual aid practice
